If she was Christened Florence Beatrice, then would she appear in the registers as Florence Beatrice, or could she also be put down as just Florence? Because if no then that is very likely to be the one.

Hi,

I dont think theres a special form to print off on their website. I've always just written to them giving the details. Make sure you give all the information though plus possible variations (I once didnt get a certificate because I requested Osborn rather than Osborne, even though the forename, year and father matched!)

Hi millerina

You mentioned the father fought in the Boer War.  Do you know where the regiment fought?  Did he survive the War.  I am researching someone who died at siege of Ladysmith and was in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps.  It may be that the Florence was born abroad as the wives usually went with the husbands to the front.

Worth checking out

John,

Thanks for the tip, you could well be right on that one, I have still been unable to find any birth certificate for Florence, and have still not found her or her family in the 1901 census. Her Father did survive the Boer War, but unfortunately I have not yet been able to go to Kew and search through the QSA medal roll to find out where he fought or anything else about him. All I know is that he served with the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. What you say is really interesting, I had no idea that wives went with their husbands, that could explain an awful lot, and it certainly is worth checking out (though I have absolutely no idea how to go about doing that!!)

Thanks again,
millerina  ;D

Hi there,

I know exactly how you feel, I have the same probem and am getting nowhere!

My great grandma was born in 1897 (according to her marriage cert) Her father was deceased so no occupation given.  I have no idea where she was born.  I can't match her to any family in 1901 and I don't know of any siblings.  Neither can I locate her death certificate, she apparently died in 1927 but according to everywhere I've looked she hasn't died or been born!

Best of luck with locating Florence.

Legs,

I agree, it is just so frustrating when all the records would have you believe that your relative did not exist, I think that our only hope is the 1911 census, that is such a long time to wait for it to be released though!

Good luck with finding your Great Grandma,

Frustrating doesn't even come close sometimes!  :-\ I keep hitting the same brick wall over and over again.  I cannot wait for the 1911 census either, although I'm not sure it'll help as I'll still not know af any siblings, her father's occupation or an area of birth, the 1921 may be of more help as she married in 1923 and her 1st son was born in 1923 so I'm hoping she will be in or around the area she married by then!
She had a really common name too which adds another hurdle as there are hundreds of Margaret Williams' out there!

I'm starting to think that she gave a false name on her marriage cert or something seeing as I cannot trace her death either.  Unfortunatley she'll never turn up on a census with her husband and children because she 'apparently' died in 1927, she'd only been married 4 years, how sad.

Oh well.....

I wish you all the luck in the world
