I wonder if this is Charles sailing to New York on the Melbourn in 1863, he is a Gun Maker.

Very interesting, good finds Maddie.

There is a mention of Charles GIDDINGS, gunmaker, in Birmingham in 1868 ( in a case of assault against him), though there is no mention of family.

Also the guilty verdict against those who assaulted Charles

Maddie

There is a Charles GIDDINGS, born c1833 England, gunsmith (and various similar descriptions) in various US census starting with 1870 and this findagrave entry:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/70580139/charles-giddings

Don't know how common the name is, but am surprised there were 2 Charles GIDDINGS born c1833 both gun makers.

I spotted that Charles in the US census as well & he did live in Herkimer County New York which is a perfect match for the memorial on Find a Grave, as It also says died in Canada I did see a sailing in 1911 for Charles Giddings going to Canada aged 78 amongst a few other sailings from UK to New York in various years. ???

The U S census has his wife as Pamela born 1851 in England & there is a marriage on Free BMD for a Charles Giddings to Pamela Haywood Sept qtr 1869 in Aston Warwickshire, that would fit with the newspaper article in 1868.

The name Giddings with various spellings is quite common in UK but mainly in Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire which is were I have an interest but I do agree with you Maddy that to have 2 Charles born c1833 & Gun Makers is very surprising .

Must go to bed. :)

That certainly looks possible Kay.

Though it's still uncertain whether the children entering the school/orphanage are the ones the op is looking for. Especially as Kate's father is Edward on the marriage certificate, though if he had deserted early on, she may not have the correct name.  :-\

I'm still interested to know what occupation Edward is said to have had on the marriage certificate?

Yes - It certainly looks as though the two children in the workhouse  may have had little contact with their father after their early years.  I can't see their mother post 1861 :-\

Great find with the baptsims Kay, there does seem to be only the one marriage for a Charles & Margaret with the correct surnames in the right time frame.
Would be nice to find William after 1866 or even Margaret after 1861. ???
