Thomas Baynard
« on: Tuesday 22 November 22 15:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

On the Cornwall OPC Database baptisms page for 1640 at Sancreed, there is the baptism of Alice White, which indicates that she was the base child of Thomas Baynard.

I am interested in identifying Thomas Baynard, for whom I have not found a likely baptism or marriage record.

I think he may be the father of Grace, Jane and William, all of whom were baptised at Madron in the 1650s and 60s. A number of Ancestry Family Trees indicate that the mother of these three children was Grace 'Truvan'. I think that she may have been Grace Treuren, who was baptised at Sancreed in 1620 (parents John and Genifer).

Perhaps there may be some other document which would help in identifying Thomas Baynard?

Thanks,

Gordon

There is this will:

Will of Thomas Baynard, yeoman, of Sancreed
Reference number: AP/B/1453
Date: 1666
Link: https://kresenkernow.org/SOAP/detail/fe6ba74a-46f2-43b9-b499-ad899ef7bc76/

I have been informed that some Cornish wills are available to view for free on FamilySearch, but I have no ancestors from this county so I am not quite sure how one would go about finding the correct will.

If Alice was his illegitimate child, then she is probably not going to be mentioned in his will, but it may provide you with more information about Thomas (assuming there was only 1 Thomas Baynard in Sancreed around this time).

I'm just wondering about which Thomas is which as there are Thomas Baynards having children in both Madron and Sancreed in the 1650s/60s:

Madron:

Grace Baynard, bap.1655 in Madron; father: Thomas.
Jane Baynard, bap. 1658/9 in Madron; father: Thomas.
Thomas Baynard, bap. 1663 in Madron; father: Thomas.

Unfortunately, I cannot find a will for a Thomas Baynard from Madron for this time period.

Sancreed:

Thomas Baynard, bap. 1660 in Sancreed; father: Thomas, mother: Elizabeth.
Gabriel Baynard, bap. 1663 in Sancreed; father: Thomas, mother: Elizabeth.
Dorothy Baynard, bap. 1665 in Sancreed; father: Thomas, mother: Elizabeth.

The Thomas is Sancreed has his last child in 1665, suggesting that his is the will proved in 1666.
This Thomas is also likely the second son of Gabriel Baynard, whose will has been transcribed:
https://www.opc-cornwall.org/wills/sancreed_will_baynard_gabriel_1644.pdf

However, a gap of 20 years between children (albeit unmarried for his first) does seem rather large, so maybe Alice's father is the Thomas from Madron. I cannot find anything conclusive.

My Cornish ancestors moved between Sancreed and Madron quite regularly, which isn't a great help either.

The name Grace seems of some significance in the family, which might indicate Thomas of Madron.

There was a Thomas Baynard buried at Madron in 1694. (The son born in 1663 appears to have died in 1733.) There is no indication of the age at death.

There was a daughter Elinor of Thomas and Elizabeth baptised in 1654 at Sancreed.

It looks as if Thomas and Elizabeth married during the Civil War period.

It seems highly likely that Elizabeth Baynard, who married Abraham Chegwin (1651 -), in 1682, was their daughter and probably baptised when no records were kept.

The will mentioned above is that of Gabriell Baynard (1579 - ). He died on 8th Feb 1646/7. He was married to Johan and sons William and Thomas were born in 1599 and 1600. Alice, who is mentioned in the will, would have been the daughter of Thomas, thus the grand-daughter of Gabriell, rather than his daughter, as stated in the will.
