I wondered what P S meant in the 1862 mention - Penal Servitude?

February 1862 Aldershot
Francis Hogan, Soldier, 19 yrs 4 yrs penal servitude - Church Breaking and Larceny

May 1862 - Manchester Assizes
Francis Hogan, 19 yrs soldier Sacrilege
Brother Charles

Other records from 1862 have similar information.

Good Morning heywood,

Thank you for the "Military Gazette" information which is extremely helpful.  Is there any way I can obtain a copy of the extract you quoted?

I did not mention Francis HOGAN's criminal career simply to avoid muddying the waters.   I raised the topic in the hope someone could unearth attestation papers etc. that would confirm the connection I sought.

Thank you again

BAC3

I saw it in FindMyPast newspaper snippets and it will also be available in the British Newspaper Archives. I don’t have access to either.
This is what I see:
‘ A Daring Thief.—Francis Hogan. a private of 20th Regiment, was charged with stealing I'D yards carpet, value 505., the property of Mr. V. draper, of “

I posted the criminal records etc as I know of your research from the past  :)

Hello heywood,

I subscribe to both FindMyPast and the British Newspaper Archives.......certainly FindMyPast carries reports but I am not allowed access (so I never research them) and the latter has no reports at all!!!

At least the FindMyPast snippets are useful.

Thank you for being so helpful.

If I may just poke my nose in - regarding the first baptism of Francis Hogan in Galway (although I know that isn't the real issue here) -- he was baptised as Church of Ireland - St Nicholas Parish - Arran Island, County Galway on 12 March 1840 (RootsIreland). Father Timothy, mother Catherine - but her surname is shown as Hogan.

In the newspaper report previously mentioned by Heywood (Military Gazette) - 2 little snippets of interest in what is a lengthy, detailed report.

'Prisoner said his name was Hoggins and that he belonged to 4th Company of 20th Regiment'.

So this confirms the same Regiment, but was just a different Company from that shown in 1861.

The father Timothy Hogan MAY have died in Chorlton in 1859 - and that is why brother, Charles, is shown as next of kin on the prison papers.

Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

BAC3 -- as you have access to Find My Past - the newspaper report mentioned previously is in the Aldershot Military Gazette 15th Feb 1862.

It's not a very clear one, print wise, as one edge is at the inner side of a bendy bit on the page!!

Hope this link works for you;
