Querying Marriage date and Marriage Banns
« on: Friday 25 November 22 13:14 GMT (UK) »
My 5x grgrandparents were married 1/5/1757 but the Banns of marriage were dated 5/12/1757 and the Marriage Notice dated 19/12 1757 according to Family Search. I have not been able to verify either as I will need to see the original documents.
Can anyone help with this?

FindMyPast has image of parish record for marriage, definitely 1st May 1757. Marriage before theirs is 28 April and one after is 19 May, so sequence is all right.

Thank you Lizzie.

I know the start of the years changed around that time but it is still strange that there is so long between the date of Banns (5 Dec) and marriage date(1 May).

Scrolling back from the marriage record, I have found the relevant Banns. Curiously they say banns read on 5th, 12th and 19th Dec 1757. In the marriage record the years is written out "fifty seven"  on the banns it is given in number. Both written by the same vicar.
I wonder if he got confused by the date change and continued to write 1757  in May when he should have advanced a year after Lady day in March,

A marriage should happen within 3 month of the Banns being read, but I've seen instances of that being stretched a bit. I think there's something about not marrying in Lent as well, so that could have delayed things.

Looking further at the Banns book, rev John Dickinson really is confused!
At the beginning of the page there's a set of banns in Oct 1756
Then 3rd, 10th, 17th April 1757, then your couple on 5th, 12, 19th  Dec 1757, then a couple on 1st, 8th and 15th May 1757, then Sept / Oct 1757.

The 5th Dec 1757 was a Monday not a Sunday, the 5th Dec 1756 was a Sunday. I think Rev Dickinson forgot to write the Banns in the book when he should have done and only remembered when the couple got married a few months later, then wrote in the current year not 1756 as it should have been
