Newspaper article, 1906, San Francisco
« on: Friday 25 November 22 14:13 GMT (UK) »
I need a complete copy of a 1906 newspaper article from San Francisco.  The snippet I have was chopped off and the date and newspaper source are unknown.  It would have been published in the days following the San Francisco earthquake (18 April 1906).
Wiltshire:  Banks, Taylor

Gloucestershire:  Barnard, Marsh, Crossman
Bristol:  Banks, Duddridge, Barnard

Wigtownshire:  Logan, Conning
Wisconsin:  Ennis, Chapman, Logan, Ware
Maine:  Ware, Mitchell, Tarr, Davis

Just for the record, at newspapers.com I can find records of Beulah Logan touring and speaking before and after the earthquake, and I can find various accounts of other events at the Saint Francis Hotel relating to the earthquake, but I cannot find the article you are looking for.

There are reports of her speaking at Sedalia, Missouri on April 10th, and at Springfield, Missouri on April 29th, but nothing in between those dates.

Maybe someone else will have more luck.

This isn't the article you asked for from the snippet you posted, but is about the same incident in that article. This article and others similar, appeared in dozens of papers across the country around April 24-25. Most all the other articles refer to her as just Miss Logan or give no name at all and say "a woman".

Apparently, from reading some of the other clippings, there was a group of individuals who were going around after the earthquake and stealing rings and jewelry off the dead bodies. They were cutting off the fingers of female victims to get the rings because their fingers had swollen, and they weren't able to just pull them off. It appears they thought Miss Logan was dead, when she was lying unconscious on the floor, and cut her finger off to get her rings.

Do a search at Newspaper com for - "finger of her left hand", with Date of  - Apr 1906
You will get over a hundred results from around the country & even Canada for Apr 25-26 about this incident.

Thanks, AB and RJ.

"bound for Chicago where her parents reside"

Actually, her parents were both long dead and, in any case, they had never resided in Chicago.

Hi Erato,

Do you know about this website?

https://cdnc.ucr.edu/

I haven’t checked to see if your article is there, but it is very helpful (and free!) when searching for San Francisco and some California news.  Like other newspapers, San Francisco newspapers also included noteworthy information from other states.  I thought I would mention it in case you want to search in the future for other things.

(How sad about Miss Logan).  :-\

I was hoping to get the complete article that fully identifies the victim as Beulah Logan so I could submit it to the San Francisco Museum for their registry of earthquake stories.  'Miss Logan' is a bit vague but the first name and the mention of Micronesia and the Congregational church definitively identify her as my Miss Logan.

Not the article you want, but this one mentions her approximate age.

I tried searching for society and luxemburger (from an article above yours) to try to find the newspaper, but that didn’t help.  I also tried a quick search for key words and couldn’t find the article but this is another great site, for future lookups.

Thanks, Lisa.  I had checked Chronicling America and the California digital collection but no luck so far in finding that more detailed article.  I suppose I can send the mutilated article to the museum and let them worry about where it was originally published if it matters to them.
