I would just do what BB suggested and get the marriage cert.

If that doesn't work then try the MOD.

His name would be SMITH!!! ;)

Thanks Maureen yes I said that to my Mother. I will go with MC as it will give most info and apply to MOD in the meantime x

Hope not its getting complicated enough. Just realised he wasn't much older than my Grandad so it must have seemed a weird set up. My Mother said he was the lodger but for respectability they got married x

That may, or may not, explain the 1939 Register entry for the household  :-\

Good point. I'm wondering now if he knew her first husband maybe through the army. I may have to look more closely he would be about 44 when they got married x
