What Rank is he holding in the photo?
« on: Sunday 27 November 22 08:49 GMT (UK) »
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=867926.0

I have just posted this Thread/photo for improvement and clean up.  (Waiting  confirmation.)

I am wondering if it is possible to tell by the pips on his shoulders what rank he holds at the time.   Might make the date more certain.   I think he has two 'pips' which I believe would make him Lieutenant - correct?   Just looked at the electoral roll for 1916 and he was an Military instructor in that year's roll . . . .  so,   does that sound right for Lieutenant?

Thanks for any help - not sure it is possible.

As the photograph has not yet appeared in the other thread, this is based on your description. Yes if he has two stars (referred to as 'pips') on his epaulettes he would have been a Lieutenant. If he was serving at a school then he might well have been an instructor in that rank, but given how short the Army was of junior officers in 1916, it may be an indication that he was medically unfit to serve in an active unit. By the regulations, his rank should have been worn on the cuff of his jacket, but during the First World War the unofficial move of the officer rank badges to the epaulette was condoned. The Dress Regulations were changed after the war to reflect this de facto change.
I am confused by your reference to an electoral roll in 1916. There were no electoral rolls in Britain for the period of 1915-1917.

I agree with Shaun. The collar dogs look like the Australian Army generic badge. Hence the 1916 Electoral roll entry I suppose.

Sorry, I assumed that you would know that I was talking about a military school such as a School of Infantry or a Small Arms School etc.

OK - found some old info from years ago, when I had more of a handle on things.
Sorry to ask for info I already had  -  I had forgotten I had it.   :-[ :-[

George was already in the army as an instructor when he married in 1913.  But though looking very carefully (way back then) I could not find out when he actually joined.   He was indeed a Lieutenant when he left for Europe.

His Army Service numbers are VP7454 Series B2455.

Any clues on how to progress would be welcome please oh knowledgeable ones.
