Possible Royal Marines Death 1888
« on: Monday 28 November 22 19:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have a relative who was a Sgt in the RMA but I know nothing of his service record. His name was William Holland and he was born in 1855 in Dorset. It appears that he died in 1888 at the age of 33 and, given that his daughter's marriage certificate in 1907 gives his occupation as RMA Sgt, I presume that was his position when he died. He is buried in Southsea. I have been unable to trace any casualty records online and was wondering if anyone has any ideas. He may have died of natural causes but seems quite young so a military cause of death is quite possible. I can of course order a death certificate but was just wondering if there's another way to find out more about him. Thanks.

This is him presumably:   https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C14469446

There's a report of his funeral in the Hampshire Telegraph of 22 December 1888, page 8, but no mention of cause of death. I doubt it will be on his military record either. I would guess either accident or natural causes.

There's another mention of him on page 5 "the late untimely death of Sergeant Holland". Just above "Charles Dickens...."  in column 3

Sorry shaunj, I pressed the wrong buttons when looking at The Hampshire Telegraph and didn't get to see the funeral report. Does it give many extra details or just that the funeral took place? Thanks
