Uniform identification please
« on: Tuesday 29 November 22 13:40 GMT (UK) »
I would very much like to know what the uniform is and an approximate date, if possible.
It’s said to be gr gran’s brother, who was born in Scotland in 1858.

Sorry it’s so faded. I’ve not yet had time to restore it and now my iMac’s bust!

TIA

Possibly a Hussar, I tried narrowing it down by the position of the plume on his busby, but without success.

Agree - Hussar, not able to find Sabretache badge easily. So not sure if regular army, yeomanry or other.

What does the inscription say? "Character in (Castle of ? )..........1889" ? So it's probably a theatrical costume?

I think it's "The Castle of Como", a romantic opera by George Cockle, produced for the first time in London in October 1889.

Thank you all.
I had a vague feeling it might be a Hussar’s uniform and will investigate further.

Shaun J, YES you could very well be correct
I’ve been unable to zoom in and look at it properly.

I shall look up the opera later.

I’m told that gt gran had a lovely singing voice and I discovered that other members of the family were singers.

Much appreciated
