Matilda Hazard
« on: Tuesday 29 November 22 22:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello from NZ,

I am researching a lady named Matilda Hazard. To the best of what I have read it seems she likely came from Pembrokeshire. She was born in 1838 and had a brother named Thomas Hazard (born in 1843) and a sister-in-law Mary. Their grave is here: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/215334018/matilda-hazard

If it is possible to confirm if she was in fact from Pembrokeshire, that would be wonderful.

Thank you Ashley

Haven't found a birth record for a Matilda Hazard b. 1838 yet but there is one for a Thomas Hazard b. 1843 in Pembrokeshire, Wales. His mmn is ''Thomas''. If that's her brother Thomas and he was born in Pembrokeshire then it's likely she was too.

I think this could be the family on the 1851 census, which would confirm her being from Pembrokeshire:
Living on Dark Lane, Saint Mary, Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wales

Thomas Hazard    b.1812     Confectioner (Master)        b. Guernsey
Ann Hazard    b.1811                                                  b. Clearwell, Gloucestershire
Eliza Hazard   b. 1836           Scholar                           b. Dorchester
MATILDA HAZARD b.1838      Scholar                          b. Pembrokeshire, Wales
THOMAS HAZARD b. 1843     Scholar                          b. Pembrokeshire, Wales
Albert Hazard       b. 1845     Scholar                          b. Pembrokeshire, Wales
Emily Hazard        b.1848                                           b. Pembrokeshire, Wales
Edgar Hazard        b.1851                                           b. Pembrokeshire, Wales

If you think this is them, do you need them on any other censuses?
Hope this helps.  :)

there is a Thomas Hazard the right age in the Pembroke area

Here a witness in a manslaughter case when aged 11 in 1854 - father Thomas, of Dark St
https://newspapers.library.wales/view/4348205/4348206/1/

There's a Thomas Hazard in later 1850s/early 1860s in court a few times in connection with his carrier/omnibus business - he may still be in town in the 1870s  [the father?]

And a Thomas Hazard found guilty of stealing 60 sheaves of barley in 1862
https://newspapers.library.wales/view/3303473/3303476/9/

1851 - Dark Lane , Pembroke

Thomas Hazard    39
Ann Hazard    40
Eliza Hazard    15
Maplate Hazard    13  - probably Matilda on the image. Daughter
Thomas Hazard    7
Albert Hazard    6
Emily Hazard    3
Edgar Hazard    3 Mo
Ann Mathias    35
George Thomas    46
Ann Thomas    34
Mary Ann Truscott    2
Jane Lewis    24

These individuals are next door

HAZARD, MARGARET       THOMAS
GRO Reference: 1840  J Quarter in PEMBROKE UNION  Volume 26  Page 658

Looks like she could be Thomas's sister
Richard Wernham (Berkshire 18th century),
William Hissey (1805 to 1813, Hampstead Norris),
Kapirin (Siberia 19th Century),
Kitching 1850,
Mary Howse born 1806 ish,

Hmm - not sure if we're on the right lines

1861 - Pembroke
Anne Hazard    50    Head
Eliza Ann Hazard    25    b Dorchester
Margaret Hazard   20
Thomas Hazard   17
Albert Hazard   16
Emily Hazard   13
Edgar Hazard   7

Wish I could find them on 1841 to see if Matilda and Margaret are two different people

Possibly when Matilda is in Brighton in 1861 as Mabel Bagshawe said? this is her family and Thomas Hazard in 1861 at home in Pembrokeshire perhaps, unless margaret and matilda are the same person.

Anne Hazard      b.1811      Confectioner           b. Gloucestershire
Eliza Ann Hazard      b.1836        Confectioner       b. Dorchester
Margaret Hazard       b.1841        Confectioner       b. Pembrokeshire, Wales
THOMAS HAZARD     b.1843         Groom, Domestic Servant      b.Pembrokeshire, Wales
Albert Hazard           b. 1845       Joiners Apprentice                  b. Pembrokeshire, Wales
Emily Hazard            b.1848        Scholar                                 b. Pembrokeshire, Wales
Edgar Hazard            b. 1854       Scholar                                 b. Pembrokeshire, Wales
