Grandfather Thomas Clarke
« on: Wednesday 30 November 22 12:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have tried to find out where my grandfather was born (which country of the UK). All his children are deceased and they never knew where their dad was born.

I was hoping the release of the 1921 Census on SP might show the country of his birth, however, all searches are showing no results?
wonder if any of you good people can help/advise me on where to go with this.

My grandfathers name was Thomas Clarke born 1890, not thought to be in Scotland.
He married my gran 1918 in Glasgow. My gran was born in Greenock.

I found  grand dad Thomas Clarke on the 1921 valuation roll living in Adelaide St. Gourock, his occupation giver as Torpedo Factory worker.
 Any help would be appreciated.
thanks in anticipation Thomas Clarke Owen

Have you downloaded a copy of the Scottish 1918 marriage cert which will give both his parents names as well as his mothers maiden name.

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  - you will have to purchase credits

Thomas Clarke is a very common name & freebmd shows 20 births in 1890 for that name just in England & Wales

Did he marry Helen D Hamilton?

When you have his parents details you can either post them here or use freebmd to find his parents marriage   www.freebmd.org.uk

Once you have his mothers maiden name you can use GRO online to look for his birth
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

However - if you are unfamiliar with English records - just reply & post the details here & we'll have a look for you

Hi Carole, thanks for your reply. I have my maternal grandparents marriage certificate from SP, they married in Glasgow 1918. Yes my gran was Helen Duncan Hamilton.

On their marriage Certificate my grandfathers parents are William Clarke (Occupation Milk Salesman).deceased and Elizabeth/Elisabeth Beaumont. deceased.
My grandfather died in 1979 in Gourock Renfrewshire aged 89. I knew him well although never thought to ask where he was born, he seemed to me to have an English Accent.

I have tried the English records before with no luck, as you say a lot of Thomas Clarkes born 1890.

kind regards
Tommy

The GRO online birth index has an entry for Thomas Arthur Clarke, mother's maiden name Beaumont, born in Bolton in 1892.

Thank you Margow, I'm pretty sure my grand father and I don't know if he had a middle name was born 1890, however, it does seem a coincidence that Clarkes mother maiden name was Beaumont.

Would you know if he had any brothers or sisters?

There is a marriage in Bolton for a Thomas Arthur Clarke in 1921 age 28 so he might
be the birth Margow found  :-\

His father was Peter Clarke who married Emma Beaumont in 1888.

Tommy, have you looked at this 1921 census entry?

Renfrew

Other persons in household:
