Hencefaith Maw
« on: Saturday 03 December 22 14:48 GMT (UK) »
I would appreciate any assistance in tracing the surname of Hencefaith who married Mathew Maw probably in Wrawby round about 1710 or possibly earlier. Matthew was born in approximately 1690.

Their son, also Matthew, was born in 1712 in Wrawby. Unfortunately I do not know the names of any of his siblings.

Many thanks.

OK -- a search has brought up the following:

Matthew Maw, baptised Wrawby 24/10/1712, father Matthew, mother Hencefaith

Jolland Maw, baptised Wrawby 18/9/1714, father Matt, mother Silent

A search for a woman born in Lincolnshire with the Christian name of Hencefaith found nothing.

A search for a woman born in Lincolnshire with the Christian name of Silent found:

Silence Faith Jolland baptised July 1684 in West Halton, Lincolnshire, father Thomas

I believe that Silence Faith Jolland married Matthew Maw as their second son was Baptised Jolland. I also believe that Hencefaith was a mis transcription of Silence Faith

There is also a George Maw who was baptised at Bigby (3 miles from Wrawby) on the 21/6/1717 -- father was Matthew and mother was Silence

Thank you so much.  Very interesting as Matthew 1712-1793 married Elizabeth Holgate, and their daughter was Silence Maw, born on 17/6/1744 at Bigby.

I wondered where the name Silence had come from and this has now given me a lot more to explore.

Appreciate your help.

The use of Silence as a given name was popular in the 17th Century by Puritans -- have you considered that Silence Faith came from a Quaker family?

I had not considered that at all.  I know that the Maw family were not Quakers, and, until now, had just been looking into Hencefaith.  I had thought that Matthew and Elizabeth had just picked an odd name for their daughter Silence, not thinking that it could be a family name.

My husband has his family bible and in there was a piece of paper dated 1741 stating that Elizabeth, the daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth (Holgate) was baptized July 20th at Bigby. Signed by, I think, the Minister, one C D Barrand Re?

My husband's relationship is directly through the great granddaughter of Elizabeth - Sarah.

Hencefaith was just one of my brick walls and had just been bugging me for years as I could find no trace at all of her. It now would appear  that the H in the transcription could have been a combination of a badly written SiL. I now just need to go through the marriages for Wrawby or possibly West Halton to find and confirm it.

Really appreciate your assistance.

Thank you. Unfortunately the marriage of Matthew and Hencefaith (Silence Faith) is not available, so I have written to family search in the hopes that they will scan and send it to me so that I can confirm your thoughts.

I must say that I totally agree with you, but am a "see the paperwork" person before they enter my tree.

Now just for the 4 - 6 weeks wait!
