James widdowson
« on: Sunday 04 December 22 10:03 GMT (UK) »
I’m after some advice regarding the military service of my great grandfather James Widdowson.

James was born in Loughborough circa 1890 or 1891 (there is another man same name born in Hathern  which is the nearby town and I can’t tell which birth date is my GGF)

When he married Frances Davidson 24th April 1916 it stated his residence as Southsea.   Research has lead me to find Southsea Portsmouth was a Military training base.   I’ve tried countless times to find any military records for James any tips or ideas gratefully received

According to his marriage record his father was called William. He appears in the 1901 and 1911 Census in Loughborough with parents William and Sarah.

Thank you for checking for me I did already have this information.   I might have thought James had a reserved occupation although I’m not sure if this happened in WW1?    It’s just that his marriage certificate didn’t have his home address in Loughborough.    The mystery continues !

I'd considered "reserved occupation".
In January 1918 the age of exemption for certain categories was lowered eg

"Armature transformer or other electrical winder -  Prev age of exemption - 25  New age - 23"

Trying to confirm the age of exemption when the Military Service Act was introduced Jan 1916.
