Civil War Veteran - any info please
« on: Sunday 04 December 22 19:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi all -

I have a post regarding these images on the Photo Restoration/Date old Photos board https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=868043.0

An old photograph album has been given into my care. It's in a terrible state of repair - it was found during the renovation of an old building (in west of Scotland)
The album has been filled with a selection of postcards - some of landscapes/views, some novelty, some music hall performers but mainly family images. Sadly, virtually no names have been recorded - making it difficult to identify the people.
These two postcards intrigued me because they appear to have been taken in the US.
The elderly gentleman appears to be a Civil War Veteran and a Rootschatter has identified his hat badge as being of The Grand Army of the Republic.
Is there anyone who can give me any further information about the medals/ribbon he is wearing. I am wondering if I can establish which State he was living in?
The ladies look to be in some sort of costume? Any clues from their clothing?

Grateful for any suggestions. Thank you for reading.

Looby :)

I think the big star is a Medal of Honor.  1,522 were awarded during the Civil War.  There is a list of recipients here (not that it narrows things down very much)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_Civil_War_Medal_of_Honor_recipients
Wiltshire:  Banks, Taylor
Somerset:  Duddridge, Richards, Barnard, Pillinger
Gloucestershire:  Barnard, Marsh, Crossman
Bristol:  Banks, Duddridge, Barnard
Down:  Ennis, McGee
Wicklow:  Chapman, Pepper
Wigtownshire:  Logan, Conning
Wisconsin:  Ennis, Chapman, Logan, Ware
Maine:  Ware, Mitchell, Tarr, Davis

Thank you for that, Erato.
I will investigate this further - although like you say it doesn't narrow it down too much - but it is a step in the right direction.

The Maltese Cross appears to be a Woman's Relief Corps medal.

Thank you, Erato. Well done on finding that.
The Maltese Cross being the medal far left on his jacket?
Why would he be wearing a medal awarded to a woman? Would it most likely have been awarded to his wife? If he is a widower, would he be allowed to wear it in her honour?
(Perhaps you won't know the answer to above, Erato  :) - but maybe someone else will)

Ahhhh - that makes better sense. Silly me. Thank you for clarifying that to me, Erato.

I think the big fringed ribbon is a GAR reunion ribbon.  Many are pictured here but I don't see one exactly the same:

And the thing on his lapel I think is a scrinched up flag pin like the one on this ribbon:

Erato's GAR reference accords with the capbadge which appears to be this one
