Deciphering of locations of POW camps in WW2
« on: Tuesday 06 December 22 12:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could help me work out the names of the locations of the working camps my Grandad was in:
Someone helped me with the last one being Zempelburg (incorrectly spelt Zempleburg) which I think is right.
The first letter in the first name looks like a ''T'' from a previous word so think it starts with T.
The places are probably places in Poland, as that's where the main camp he was in was, but he was captured in Ypres.
Any help is appreciated even if it's just one letter  :)
Thanks!

(also if anyone knows what the words he's written in the second row: ''Offril? 1942'' and ''Five? 1942'' are/mean then that would be great)

I think the mystery word in the date column might be 'June'.

So it reads April 1942 - June 1942, then on the next line June 1942 - 27/1/1945

The second one down may be an abbreviation for Bischöflich Papau (Papowo Biskupie in Polish) which is located north of Thorn (Toruń).

Thank you Tony, that would make sense since he was in Stalag XXA which was in Toruń
thanks,

Is it possible that the first one is ''Tuchel''?

@Tonepad and Curtainhooks, I would agree with both Papowo Biskupie and Tuchel as probably being the places William Walker was referring to. I did not include them in my earlier reply in the other thread because the headings said 'Working Camps' and I found no evidence that these places were in fact German work camps or Stalags.
On the other hand when he mentioned marching from Zempelburg to Celle it didn't matter that these might just have been towns and not necessarily camps or Stalags.

Tuchel (Tuchola) seems reasonable - north of Bydgoszcz and not too far from Toruń.
