And what does his marriage certificate say his mother's name was?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

James's birth recorded him being illegitimate and under his mother's maiden name of Milne:

James Milne
Birth 2 Jul 1861 Botriphnie, Banff
Mother: Jessie Milne

In 1871, James is showing as James Grant and living with maternal grandparents Peter and Margaret (Norie) Milne in Hill Of Cairnty, Borham, Moray.

Jessie looks to have married a David Duff on 27 May 1871 in Boharm, Moray.

These details come from confirmation of mother's name on his marriage entry (mother Jessie Milne now Duff).

Question remains on who was Alexander Grant, showing as shoemaker and deceased when James married

Well, there's a 21-year-old Alexander Grant, shoemaker, born Rathven, in Rathven, and a 35-year old one, born Inveravon, in Rothes in the 1871 census.

I had thought the Inveravon one was the most likely.

He was born in Inveraron to John Grant and Janet Stuart/Stewart. Baptism or birth date showing as 1 April 1834. At least 11 children born to this couple, all in Inveravon.

From 1841:

John Grant 35 lime quarrier
Janet Grant 35
William Grant 15
Elspet Grant 10
Alexander Grant 7
Robert Grant 5
Ann Grant 3
Mary Grant 2
George Grant 2 months

Address: Bridgehaugh , Inveravon, Banff

He never married. He died in 1884 at Burnside, Glenlivet, Banff. Confirming parents as John Grant and Janet Stuart, both deceased by 1884. He died from long term TB.

It fits with what James showed, but not sure how to confirm further really (DNA matches or a paternity action by Jessie Milne possibly).

You mean James and Barbara's children don't you?

Good to work from the records on SP. Birth years for their children show as:

1901 William
1903 James
1904 Alexander
1907 David Duff
1909 Janet Milne
1911 Albert
1915 John
1918 Eliza Jane

All births in Gamrie. Maybe a George in 1913 b. Gamrie?

Some possible deaths on the death index on SP, with mother's maiden name Porter (would all need verification from the originals):

1985 Janet Milne GRANT age 75 at Aberlour
1986 James GRANT age 83 at Aberchirder
1987 Alexander GRANT age 82 at Newport on Tay
1990 John GRANT age 75 at Aberchirder
2018 Eliza Jane GRANT age 99 at Aberdeen
