Henry Wright - chimney sweep of Mere
« on: Friday 09 December 22 11:47 GMT (UK) »
My 5x great grandfather was one Henry WRIGHT born c1730.

I've never found a marriage for him, just a possible to Sarah Shephard in Portsea in 1762 (I've researched the ones Gloucestershire and it's not them)

The couple have seven children together in Mere. Their second daughter Rachel married Aaron Maidment and it seems that their son Henry was apprenticed to a Henry Wright, chimney sweep of Mere, in 1803 when he was aged 11.

A coincidence - or could he have been apprenticed to his grandfather?

I might be clutching at straws, but I'm desperate to find out more about my Henry Wright who died a year after his wife, in 1826

Could there be an index of chimney sweeps anywhere?

Would Mere museum carry any resources I wonder.

I can only see six baptisms on Ancestry Lucy 1765 to Judith 1772 the record’s only note father. The only reference I can find that suggest the mothers name was Sarah is the tree on Ancestry for Thomas 1770, below?

Thanks everyone for your kind replies.

I have Henry and Sarah's descendants, i.e. children, in-laws, grandchildren etc.  What I'm desperate to know - and this has been my brickwall for 20 plus years! - is where they came from; who were Henry and Sarah's parents, grandparents etc.

If they were the couple who married in Portsea, why did they end up in Mere? Could his wife have been Sarah Sheppard from Gillingham (baptised there in Mar 1740). If that's the case, why did they go to Portsea to get married. Perhaps they eloped? Maybe Henry was originally a sailor, if so, where was he from?

Lots of ifs, buts and maybes but no definitive answers. Grrr!

So, I'm hoping there may be clues 'outside the box,' for example in apprenticeship records and so on.

Ultimately, I'm wanting to trace my maternal ancestry as far back as I can but I've reached a dead end with Sarah.

Yours hopefully,

Joy
