Mary Jane MARSHALL appears to be a servant at the household of Jackson MOORE (farmer) and family at "High Scan" Harrington in 1871.

Yes that looks right, couldn't quite make out the handwriting.

Susan, do let us know if your friend thinks this is the right family and wants more information. I think there are more children than just the 3 girls in the 1861 census.

I haven't been able to get in touch with my friend to see if she had got the name Stocks Farm wrong But do you know where I could find out if there were any Marshalls farming in the district

There’s a Hannah Marshall age 27 a servant born in Harrington as a servant to Edward Nelson a farmer of about 10,000acres mainly mountain at Gatesgarth Farm Buttermere in the 1871 census.

Not in the 1870s, but there are reports in 1934 of the National Trust wanting to preserve the Buttermere Valley. Over 5000 acres was being sold - the owner was Mr W. Martin MARSHALL.
