According to the death certificate for the son Joseph Jr, he was born 29 November 1864 in Ireland. If true, that would mean his mother Mary was not in the States in 1864 when Joseph Sr. presumably died. Did Joseph Jr come to the States at a later time in his life? Did Mary ever even come to the US? How do you know Joseph Sr died in 1864 in the US? Did Joseph Sr come to the US to fight in the Civil War while his wife pregnant Mary was in Ireland?

The birth certificate for Russell, Joseph Jr.'s son, also says that Joseph Jr. was born in Ireland.

Finding the family on any census records would be helpful.

Sometimes you have to go forward to figure out what you’re looking for in going backwards.  These are rather common names, so as much detail as possible would be helpful in finding them on the census.  You can try looking for yourself at the census records at familysearch.org.

As asked previously, where did the information about his death date of 1864 and the death being in Pennsylvania come from?

Was it from a record on Ancestry or from someone's family tree?  If it was a tree, did it have any sources?  Someone might have just guessed that he died 1864 or thereafter, since his son was born then.

The only thing I see there is a tree that says Death "aft. 1864."
