No 13 - reports on his disappearance mention that he left Dunedin in May 1893, yet the Poverty Bay Herald of 7 August 1893 is reporting friends as saying he was in Otago?  Further research required.
The newspaper reports about him going missing start on 5 September 1893 so presumably the many friends in Auckland knew that he had gone to Otago but not that he had gone on to, and disappeared in, Melbourne.

Interesting story about Allan McDonald's solicitor, Edward ff Ward Jnr in the following link:

https://caliendi.com/assets/media/downloads/towsey-tales/TT%201855%20Edward%20Ward%20jnr.pdf

This is around the same time period that Edward was acting for Allan.

Allan McDonald was appointed a Justice of the Peace in March 1879.

I wonder if Allan went to Hobart, Tasmania after he went missing from the Otago Hotel, Melbourne in May 1893?

Great, so we are on the right track.

I wonder where 'Banffshire' came from? The Achnahannet where James, Donald and Allan were born  is in a parish of which parts are in Inverness-shire and parts are in Morayshire, but none of it is in Banffshire as far as I know.

Great to have it all confirmed  ;)

Some additional details hopefully here on the family of Donald and Penuel www.findagrave.com/memorial/197949650/henry-john-mcdonald

Penuel is a variant of Penelope. See www.whatsinaname.net/female-names/Penuel.html

You have probably found it now but this is the tree for son Donald born c. 1861 www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/118630565/person/192143962609/facts

Donald and Penuel must have left Scotland just after their marriage if son Donald was born in NZ in 1861.

Thanks MonicaL for your posting.
Unfortunately although I have an Ancestry sub it is for the au site not the uk side so not able to access there.  Will however check the au site for the family tree.
