It would have been possible for her to conceive at age 56 but obviously her eggs were also 56 years old so the viability would be poor.  The death of the child soon after birth would not have been unexpected.  It could also be a false registration and they were actually the grandparents, especially as 25 year old Jean MITCHELL also died in 1855.  As the child died it is irrelevent from a genealogical perspective.

The important information on the birth cert is the name and occupation of the father, the address, and the extra info that you will only find on an 1855 birth - the baptismal name of the child (if this was different from the registered name),  the ages and birthplaces of the child’s parents, and the number and sex of the child’s brothers and sisters, both living and deceased.

Is the address the same as the 1855 registered death for Jean?

Hi Debra - the location of the death of the infant and also Jean Mitchell was the same. The father on the death certificate of the infant is shown as Jean Clugston's 'husband' William Davie and she (Jean Clugston) is shown as the mother.  Its all a bit strange and maybe the child was actually Jean Mitchell's, although the death certificate does not show that. Jean Mitchell died just over two weeks following the death of the infant. Her death certificate states she died from disease of the chest combined with inflammation of the bowel.
Jean was shown living with her mother and William Davie in the 1851 census.
