Information on great great grandparents
« on: Tuesday 20 December 22 00:59 GMT (UK) »
I have been trying to find information on my great great grandparents Maurice Gahan and Cath Farrell they are from Dublin. I think they were born around 1800's. They had a son Patrick Gahan born in August 1825 and baptised at St Catherine's Dublin. They also had another son John Gahan born in 1831 and baptised at St Catherine's Dublin. I have been on other sites but to no avail have found nothing on them or their parents.

Are you certain they were born in Dublin city ?

many people from other parts of Ireland moved to the city, sometimes as a step to eventual emigration.

I would look for their marriage first and see if that can be located to try to establish a lead to further research, there may not be a record of the baptisms for Maurice and Catherine due the very early dates

most of the records for Catholic churches in the city of Dublin are on IrishGenealogy, the exception is Arran quay, St. Pauls which is included on the National Library of Ireland register site, and searchable with a free FindMyPast account

p.s. Patrick's baptism year looks 1823 to me, the register looks like a later transcript

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Have you looked into the godparents of Patrick & John? Godparents were often relatives of the parents.

Patrick's godparents were Pat Colgan and Anne Geragory (sp?) and John's were Hugh Lyons and Cathn Byrne.

Hello,

Since it can be difficult at the best of times given the time period and location.....can we go to the more recent knowledge and work back?

Is it the son Patrick who is your great-grandparent?

What is his - your great Grandparent's -  story - where did he end up etc?

Do you know anything more about John Gahan?

Cheers

Hi
Patrick Gahan is my great grandfather.
He was convicted of stealing in 1840. He was employed as an errand boy.
He had a mother and seven siblings who were dependent on him.
Patrick was transported to Australia around August 1840.
No mention of his father.
John Gahan I have no history on him or other members of the family.
Regards
Margaret

FindMyPast has a couple of records on Patrick.
Patrick Gahan is on the Kilmainham Prisoner records in 1840.

Offence: Felony Sack & Other Articles. He was sentenced to seven years in prison.

He was sent aboard the King William ship on 15th July 1840 to Australia.(image of 'Ticket of Leave' on FindMyPast)

"Patrick was transported to Australia around August 1840."

Transported to....where, specifically?...

Did Patrick have a family in Australia?

Are you descended from his family in Ireland?
