Ware marriage licence?
« on: Wednesday 21 December 22 09:51 GMT (UK) »
Joshua Chamberlain married Sarah Trudget in Ware in 1800, by licence. I don’t know whether anyone has access online to the actual licence details but if so would be grateful for info on the parties and their parents, if it is given. (I’m trying to confirm Joshua’s father. I know he was the son of James and Ann but not whether James was the same James as in other Ware records.)

Yes, he’s the one. I’m trying to establish whether the James who was his father might be the James Chamberlain, miller, who left a wife Ann and sons James and John (and other, unnmamed children) in his 1799 PCC will. I wonder if Joshua’s marriage licence might throw any light on it.

Hi,

Hertfordshire Names Online (https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/ufs/HALS_INDEXES.eb?T_USER_ID=xyz_TEMP_99&UVISITOR=1_1671638741251&T_ORDER_ID=467372&SF_EXACT_SEARCH=false&ebd=0&ebz=1_1671638741251) holds the marriage licence index for surviving bonds and allegations in the Diocesan records held at Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies.

I searched for Joshua Chamberlain and received this result:

- Joshua Chamberlain
- Sarah Trudget
- Ware St Mary
- marriage register
- 10 Nov 1800

Unfortunately, not a licence, just their entry in the marriage register. I wonder if the licence has actually survived, as I cannot find any evidence of it online. Maybe worth contacting the Hertfordshire Archives directly?

Looking at the image of the marriage register on FindMyPast, I can see that the witnesses were George Skegg and Ann Brown (x). Do these names ring any bells?

Queenie  :)
Fidler - West Ilsley, Berkshire
Hamlin/Hamlyn - Long Sutton & Martock, Somerset
Head - Marlborough & Alton Priors, Wiltshire
Minson - Kingstone, Somerset/Symondsbury, Dorset
Owsley - Buckland St Mary, Somerset
Pyke - (West) Weeke/Wick, Pewsey, Wiltshire
Salisbury - Dowlish Wake/West Dowlish, Somerset

Thanks for looking, Queenie. The witness names don’t ring a bell. Approaching Herts. Archives seems the best option,

Dave :)
