Joshua Chamberlain son of James and Ann baptized 6 July 1781 at Ware

Thanks. I’m just not sure whether all of the children of James and Ann in the 1760-1780 period in Ware were children of the same James and Ann Chamberlain.

Thanks. It isn’t really the timescale though but the fact that a will exists which possibly throws some doubt on it (or not!). It seems likely that all of these baptisms were of people in the same extended family, but maybe there were two cousins named James, who both happened to marry Anns. OTOH, I have only found one marriage in Ware itself, so maybe I’m inventing problems!

On FindMyPast - Herts baptisms to James and Ann
Mary 1762
Ann 1765
James 1767
Thomas 1769
Sarah 1771
John 1774
Kitty 1776 possibly buried as Catherine 1778
Kitty 1779
Joshua 1781

The spread of baptisms is consistent with only one James  / Ann couple. Have you traced the other siblings to see if they left wills (or wills of husbands of the daughters) and any of the property from James's will turns up again ?

The will of James in 1799 names John and James and "other children" of which there would be 6 still living by the time James died, or he could have meant those who were under 21 and not yet adults, which would just be Kitty and Joshua.

Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

- Joshua Chamberlain
- Sarah Trudget
- Ware St Mary
- marriage register
- 10 Nov 1800

Unfortunately, not a licence, just their entry in the marriage register. I wonder if the licence has actually survived, as I cannot find any evidence of it online. Maybe worth contacting the Hertfordshire Archives directly?

Looking at the image of the marriage register on FindMyPast, I can see that the witnesses were George Skegg and Ann Brown (x). Do these names ring any bells?

Queenie  :)

Ann Chamberlain of Ware married Daniel Smith in 1784 in Sacombe, so Ann Brown , the witness, is not Joshua's sister unless she was widowed and married a Mr Brown later

Many thanks. I hadn’t thought of your very good point about the spread of children through time being consistent with only one couple. Joshua looks to fit well with the rest, but I’ll see if I can locate any more wills.
