TEBBUTT, William, Born 1846, Leicester
« on: Thursday 22 December 22 14:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am completely aware of this gentleman's criminal history over the period 1860-1878, which was full and varied. Other than the details above his father was Joseph TEBBUTT, who once lived at 52 Crab Street, Leicester.   There is a possibility (conjecture?) he married a Hannah TARRY towards the end of 1864??

Hopefully someone can help discover more about his life story

I would be eternally grateful and thank you ::)

26 December 1864 at St Margaret's, Leicester.

William Bond Tebbutt, 19, batchelor, glove hand, Providence Place, son of Joseph Tebbutt, glove hand
married
Hannah Tarry, 19, spinster, - , Britannia Street, daughter of John Terry, framework knitter.

Bride and groom both made their mark.
Witnesses - Timothy Terry and Elizabeth Tebbutt, both made their mark too.

Is this the chap you're after?

Other than him, there was a William Tebbutt b. 1843 in Blaby Registration District and another b. 1848 in Leicester Registration District.

Good Evening STG,

I think you have successfully discovered one part of his life.   All the pieces seem to fit quite neatly, including his occupation, Glove Hand, which I overlooked mentioning.   Thank you.

I wonder if you could confirm the source, please, not only to add to my narrative but as a possible "lead" to further details hopefully.

For the moment,

Good Evening Debra,

Thank you so much for your post.

The information gives me definite research possibilities, alongside the advantage, with STG's help, of having established his marriage to Hannah TARRY, a narrative for William TEBBUTT is beginning to take shape.

I am extremely grateful. ::)

There is a Presbyterian baptism of Joseph James Tebbatt (sic), born 6th June 1816, on 28th January 1821 in Hinckley, son of William and Elizabeth

Joseph James Tebbutt married Eliza Holland in Stoney Stanton on 16th October 1837, son of William Tebbutt, grocer.
Eliza daughter of Peter Holland, gardener.

There is a marriage, on 14th January 1813, and licence, dated 13th January 1813, of William Tebbatt of Hinckley, grocer, to Elizabeth Reddalls.

Images for all of the above are on Findmypast, together with the 1864 marriage.

David,

Thank you for that information.....extremely helpful background.

Incidentally, I  came across your post by happenstance as for some unknown reason I was not advised in the usual email manner?

I wonder is this is Joeph Tebbut's burial in Welford Road, plot uS 604? The age would just about fit:

TEBBUTT   JOSEPH   buried 1871 AUG 20
age 57
abode LEICESTER UNION HOUSE

We don't have a death date for William, but I looked for him at Welford Rd with no one burial leaping out; there is no Hannah Tebbutt buried there.

There is however this grave at Gilroes, plot Ii 469; is this them?

TEBBUTT   Hannah   76   47 Taylor Street / NEI   Leicester   18-Dec   1922
TEBBUTT   William   79   63 Brandon Street / NEI   Leicester   2-Apr   1925
NORMAN   Thomas   67   10 Meynell Road   Leicester   4-Nov   1933
PAGE   Jean Patricia   10m   1 Spinner Cottages, Spinner Street   Leicester   17-Feb   1947

This Tebbutt couple is in the 1921 census at Britannia st, Leicester. This William at this time was a framework knitter, out of work for 3 years.

Looking back, the same couple were at this address in 1881, with 7 children ranging from 15 years to 6 months; William was a glove maker.

His wife's name is given as Sarah in 1891, but same address and children of the same name. so I think it's still the same family.

There's a married William Tebbutt, glove hand, right age, enumerated in the workhouse in 1901.  (I haven't looked for the rest of the family).
