Help to find Christina Ann Sutherland
« on: Sunday 25 December 22 15:55 GMT (UK) »
I'd be most grateful for any help in tracking down the movements of my grandaunt, Christina Ann (Annie) Sutherland, b 2 December 1889, in Stoneydale, Sandstone, Shetland, Scotland. She was probably living in Inverness, Scotland in 1917 and was mentioned as living in New Zealand in her brother's obituary in 1961. I have been unable to find any emigration, marriage or death records.

Merry Christmas  :)

Morning from NZ.

Have you checked out references to Annie SUTHERLAND in our PAPERSPAST. Or associated searches.

She may have gone to NZ to work for people whom she knew, or be with relatives. Names that would be of significance to you, but not us.

Hi Sandstone

Christina Ann SUTHERLAND married a widower in New Zealand, quite late in her life.    Her husband's first wife had died in 1950, and Christina Ann, married David EAGLESON some three years later.
They resided in Auckland.

Christina Ann EAGLESON died (exact place unknown), in May of 1984.

The NZ BDM index has her death listed as >

1984 - EAGLESON - Christina Ann - Date of birth - 17 December 1889
[ Note:  The "day" of birth varies from the date you gave, but this is not unusual to find on a NZ death record where a third party is supplying information. ]

Christina Ann SUTHERLAND - cont'd

Christina's husband, David EAGLESON appears to have died in January 1963.

[He is buried at the Tuapiro Cemetery, Tauranga,  Thames Valley, NZ.   His late first wife, together with their daughter, are buried in an adjacent plot. ]

A record for Christina Ann EAGLESON shows she was also buried at this *Tuapiro Cemetery, Tauranga, on 4 May 1984, aged 94 years.  (* see note below)

At the "findagrave" website, there is a record for Christina Ann Eagleson (submitted by a volunteer "researcher") which gives her burial place as "Pye's Pa Memorial Park", Tauranga.??

[* Note:   I would take the Tuapiro Cemetery record as being correct - the transcriptions of records from this cemetery, were the work of skilled and dedicated persons, belonging to the New Zealand Society of Genealogists. ]

At the following link is the Probate record (containing Will) for David EAGLESON which mentions Christina Ann  ... and the children of David.

I wasn't able to find a similar record for Christina Ann.

Looking at the NZ Electoral rolls, the first appearance of Christina Ann SUTHERLAND (in the Auckland area where she had later lived with her husband, David), she appears as early as 1938.   Of course she may have come to New Zealand earlier ?

1938 to 1949 - Auckland East and Auckand - North Shore rolls - SUTHERLAND - Christina Ann - spinster of 7 Alison Avenue :

After her marriage she lived with husband, David EAGLESON - retired - up until his death 1963, in the area of North Shore, Auckland.  Thereafter, in her widowhood, she remains on the e/rolls up until 1981 (extent of records available online), in the North Shore locality.

1981 - Auckland - North Shore Roll
EAGLESON - Christina Ann - at 9 Owens Road - widow

Will have another look for you for Christina's arrival in NZ.
