Margaret Rose
« on: Monday 26 December 22 04:06 GMT (UK) »
My 3 x great grandmother was born between 1814 and 1816 - I think. She married Robert Alexander in 1836 and they had five children, all born Urquhart. There is only one census return for her, in 1841 and her birthplace is England. Unfortunately she died in 1848 so no other returns to compare.

As it stands I don’t know who her parents were but it might be her father was Hugh Rose, he appears as a witness on the OPR births when Margaret’s daughter was born, as well as for her eldest son, Hugh.

Any help gratefully received.

There is a Hugh and Janet Rose in Elgin in the 1841 census, that might be worth exploring further.

..... it might be her father was Hugh Rose, he appears as a witness on the OPR births when Margaret’s daughter was born, as well as for her eldest son, Hugh.

It actually says "Hugh ROSE in Garmouth" as the witness for Jannet's baptism in 1837.  There was a  Hugh ROSE in Garmouth in 1841, who was a Tailor aged 20-24.  In 1851 Hugh ROSE, Tailor, 32 is in Garmouth, born Inverness.  In 1861 he is in Urquart with a boarder Janet ALEXANDER aged 22, born Urquhart.

Death

ROSE, HUGH
Aged 84
Mother's maiden surname: O'CARROL
1903
144 / 2 / 8
Garmouth

Many thanks to those who responded to my query regarding Margaret Rose. Yes, she died in 1848 and her infant son George also died around the same time.

Robert Alexander remarried following Margaret’s death and a couple of you quoted the 1851 where the older children, Robert, his wife and the first of their children are living in the village of Urquhart. Over the years Hugh Rose, tailor is a person of interest and obviously in the 1861 census he does have 22 year old Jannet Alexander staying with him.

Robert’s father, George Alexander was apparently a Lieutenant in the Invernesshire Militia and I wondered whether there might be a connection between George A and Margaret’s father.

Thanks once again.

From the details found by Debra for potential brother Hugh who died in 1903,  a family researcher has added these details here http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/people/people_report_view.asp?REF_ID=NM155683

Not sure how birth date has been confirmed but there is a correponding entry for a Hugh on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk:

Hugh ROSE
Parents HUGH ROSE/MARGARET FARREL
15/08/1820
Ref 098 100 / 40
Inverness

The date above could be a christening date rather than birth date.

Viewing this Hugh's death registration will hopefully let you confirm details further.

I don't know whether you have a subs to Ancestry. There is a detailed family tree there for Hugh and family www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/65531336/person/42174514552/facts

Two siblings given for him are:

Arthur Rose, 10 Mar 1805 Stirling
Janet Rose, 17 July 1818 Inverness

One more I can see with spelling variations on the index on SP:

Elizabeth Rose, 20 Nov 1803 Inverness

These entries are avaible on Scotlands People. Hopefully also include father's occupation at the time of their births.
