40th Foot Regiment Stationed in Buttevant 1820s
« on: Monday 26 December 22 19:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  We are trying to find the Armstrong family who had a Child - Thomas in 1822 in Buttevant, Ireland, County Cork.  The 40th of Foot Regiment was stationed at Buttevant at this time.

Ten years later Thomas was enlisted as a drummer boy in the 40th foot regiment in Pumah, India.  We believe either the father was also a member of the regiment or somehow the family moved to India with the Regiment. The only information we have is Thomas' enlistment record where the fathers name is shown as Robert and no other detail.

If possible we would like to know how to find the either the Birth records for Thomas, or the Regimental records of members so we can find Thomas' Mother and Father.
Thankyou and Happy New Year

Hi Selah,

On Thomas' entry on the Army Regimental Rolls of Non-commissioned Officers and Soldiers, it states that his date of marriage was 26th October 1848.

This matches with the following record:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1848/09348/5384989.pdf

On his marriage certificate to Sarah Stockwell, Thomas gives his father as "Robert Armstrong, labourer", so now his father's occupation is known, but it is rather vague.

However, Thomas is included in the British Armed Forces And Overseas Births And Baptisms record set. According to FamilySearch, the records are held by the General Register Office (GRO) and The National Archives (TNA), and information in the indexes can be used to order a copy of the actual certificate.

Thomas' birth seems to come under 3 different references:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:68KX-D31X
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:68KX-4RPX

Not sure what the difference is between the various different records. Perhaps it would be worth contacting the GRO to see if you can get a copy of the certificate?

Hello Queenie,

Thanks is a huge help.  Thank you for all the effort you put in.  I'll contact the GRO to see what we can find.

Best Wishes - Michael
