Hello, My ancestor John Hughes, husband of Rachel, father of 6 children, died 24 May 1872.  Newspaper article granting his wife administration of his effects listed him as collier late of Heolfach Ystrad Rhondda near Pontrypridd.  1871 Census listed John, Rachel and their 6 children living on Ynysgau road, hamlet of Clydach, parish Ystradyfodwg.  I'm not sure where he would have been buried.  Family lore says he died of smallpox.  I understand there was an outbreak/epidemic of smallpox in Europe at this time.  Were smallpox victims treated differently for burial?  His personal effects on death were under 50 pounds.  I'm not sure what kind of burial his family could afford.  Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Hi There

Looking at their address, Nebo chapel graveyard very close to their house at ynysgau Rd see map https://maps.nls.uk/view/135196828#zoom=6&lat=1507&lon=13033&layers=BT

Compare with the Coflein site map and use tiles at top right corner to switch between map views (Ynysygau Rd now probably as Ynysgau street)  https://coflein.gov.uk/en/site/10278/

However, this chapel was demolished and the remains of the deceased were relocated to a common grave at Penrhys Cemetery which has one single memorial listing all names of those re-buried. I can only see one side of the image in the links, and his name is not on that one view, but maybe have a look at the video (I am having trouble loading it).https://www.google.com/search?q=nebo+memorial+penrhys&rlz=1C1EODB_enGB566GB566&oq=nebo+memorial+penrhys&aqs=chrome..69i57j33i160l2.4326j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#imgrc=bpBBUUMo0kO_qM

So, since there were no cholera (or smallpox) graveyards in this area, if he was not buried at Nebo, the most likely place for his burial would have been Treorchy Cemetery or even at the parish church of Ystrdafyfodwg Church.

It would be worth contacting the Treorchy library (or Pontypridd) who would be able to find him otherwise.

Thank you Sam, I've been looking at some of these old survey maps, but was never able to locate Ynysgau Road on one.  Just to confirm, this was a map revised 1898?    Are you familiar with this area today?  Would I be able to visit and see generally this road and area?

I am familiar with the area and you can visit it.

The first map link to Scotland old maps site is for a 1900 revision of an 1898 version.

The street seems simply to have been re-named as Ynysgau street (rather than Rd) and is still there, so you can make a comparison with an earlier map alongside a side by side view of current day. The then Ynysgau Rd  is not named, in this side by side view, but is the next street up above Princess street (which is to the right FB Schools in centre of image. Ynysgau Rd / street is the street directly the other side of the railway above Princess st :https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=17.4&lat=51.64554&lon=-3.47588&layers=6&right=ESRIWorld

Here it is on Google maps https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ynysgau+St,+Gelli,+Pentre/@51.6452294,-3.4759258,18z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x486e3fceff5ea727:0xc7cbce873de5dc41!8m2!3d51.6454385!4d-3.4747217

If the family lived at a different address in the general area before this, you can probably still see that too.

Update--thank you Sam for suggesting I contact the cemetery association!   They located John Hughes, wife Rachel and her second husband Benjamin Davies all buried in the same plot in Treorchy Cemetery.
