Mary Ann Morrell and John Taylor married 1851 Oldbury
« on: Wednesday 28 December 22 16:42 GMT (UK) »
This is a long shot, but I'm asking anyway in case anyone can help me.

In my tree I have a Mary Ann Morrell. She was born in 1827 in Lawley Shropshire to George Morrell and Ann nee Miner. In 1848 she has a son Joseph Morrell in Oldbury Worcestershire. I haven't been able to find his birth registration. I did purchase his marriage certificate and his father is named as John Taylor a Miner. Mary Ann Morrell married John Taylor a Miner on 6th October 1851 at the Parish Church in Oldbury Worcestershire. They are both of full age and his father is named as Samuel (I think it reads Samuel) Taylor a clerk. Mary Ann is a spinster and John is a widower. I got this information from their marriage certificate.

Mary Ann remarries Isaac Onions on 22nd February 1857 in Wellington Shropshire. She is a widow so John has died between 1851 and 1857.

I am struggling to find anything else about John. It's a common name. If anyone can help me to find him before his marriage in 1851 and his death, I would be really appreciative.

Thanks

FreeREG has transcribed the parish records for Oldbury.

Doing a search on there for a John Taylor who died between 1851 and 1857 returns only one result:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01s08/

A 28-year-old from Brades Village who was buried on 6th June 1852. It doesn't look to me like John & Mary had any other children after they married, so maybe this explains it?

This is the likely corresponding death registration:
TAYLOR, JOHN       28
GRO Reference: 1852  J Quarter in WEST BROMWICH  Volume 06B  Page 327

For others, here is the link to a transcription of John & Mary's marriage in 1851:

Thanks! I didn't know it was on FreeREG so good to see I read the name Samuel correct on the marriage certificate!

If he was 28 when he died in 1852 that makes him born in 1824. That gives me more to look for!

Yes Mary Ann is with her parents George and Ann on the 1851 census and Joseph is there as well. In 1861 he is with Mary Ann and her new husband Isaac Onions. I purchased Jospeh's marriage certificate and it said his father was John Taylor even though her was born 3 years before his parents were married. I know that isn't unusual but I was surprised to see that John Taylor was a widow when he married Mary Ann.

Hi
Possibly John in 1851 at The Flash Oldbury
John Taylor 27 coal miner Oldbury
Eliza 23 Oldbury
Sarah A 3 Oldbury
Emma 1 Oldbury
James Robinson 18 married lodger coal miner Bristol
Rebecca 18 Oldbury

Strangely there is a suggestion that Eliza was an Eliza Onions d of Thomas and Elizabeth but I can't see a marriage to confirm this or her death.

Thanks - he does fit with the years. He did have a baby with Mary Ann three years before he married her and claimed to be a widower at marriage and a Miner. Maybe it was a bigamous marriage. It is very strange that her next husband was an Onions. I’m not sure if it is a common name. I’ll look into it further and try and find the marriage with Eliza Onions.

As I recall the only evidence John is the father of Joseph Morrell is the latter's marriage cert. If John Taylor died in 1852, Joseph might have believed John to be his father, even if he wasn't

However, Eliza Taylor has children in 1853 and 1858. The latter, Thomas, is the only birth reg I can find on FreeBMD (mmn Onions) and there's a baptism with father John and mother Eliza
