There are Army Service records for a John Hugkulstone . Step Father named as William Richard Howell, mother Emma Howell, on Findmypast. He appears to have still been alive in 1921.

I had found it but I was then lead to believe that Johnny was a Howell. not a Hugkulstone. I couldn't actually place that John (there are a lot of them in the family which leads to confusion)

The family have always been rather Sketchy about the situation.
I was told that Emma Jane said he died of a broken heart.
Something must have happened around that time.
Seems William Richard Howell was Welsh and about 10 years younger than her .
