Hello KN, its etched as was the method used on swords during the time frame. It is a 1912 Patt Cavalry Officers sword, ethced and then plated, most probably plated at his request knowing he was going to the climate of the near east where blades tended to rust badly. It says, "G.G. WEAVING South Notts Yeomanry".

Thank you for this image - so excited to see it.

I have a bag of miscellaneous photos that I will search through to see if I can find anything related to South Notts and/or GG Weaving.

Could I be cheeky and ask for a photo of the whole sword?  I'd love to share this with other family members.
