Still something of a mystery is Mr Stokes. He appears in the 1881 census as a visitor in Station Road Great Easton, the house of horse dealer Charles Pretty. He is declared as married although he was on his own.

...

I haven't found any positive evidence of him (or a wife) after 1881.

Harriet sued for divorce in 1882 on the grounds of adultery and cruelty. She names 4 women, starting soon after the marriage. she sought (and I believe got) custody of he daughter

He appears to end up in the Southwark/Christ Church workhouse in April 1912.  Civil engineer's assistant. Widower aged 63
Daughter Margaret Elizabeth last heard of in Canada. Brother Dr Arthur Samuel Stokes at Weldon, West Kettering. SIster Miss Fanny Sophia Stokes, same address with Bertha [I think it says]. Friend Mrs Newman, 3 Campbell Road, Westcliff on Sea

Also in the workhouse on the 1911 census

1901 he's a boarder in Northfield (Kings Norton area, Worcestershire). Age 52,  born Caldicote, Rutland. Occupation "staff holder". Says single

1891 - boarder in Lewisham, b Rutland aged 42. Single. Civil engineer's ?? [looks like chainman?]
