Name of a marriage witness - France 1739
« on: Tuesday 03 January 23 19:59 GMT (UK) »
Can anybody make out the name of the first witness in this marriage entry at Ciply, near Mons?
It starts with an 'A'.

The second witness is Pierre Carlier.
I have an Antoine Carlier in this family, but I'm not convinced it says that. The last letter looks like a 'd'.
Sorry about the terrible condition of the film.
Many thanks.

Not sure if any help but I've heard it can sometimes help to reverse the image and show as a negative. i.e white writing on black. I can't seem to do it myself but possibly worth a go if you or someone can.

Might it be Arnaud?

I agree Arnaud fits best; possibly also Armand.

I think your witness is Amand Cornez.

He died in Ciply 5 september 1758.

Oh my! Well spotted Zefiro! :D

I was so intent they were Carlier witnesses, and wondering why I hadn't come across an Armand Carlier, that I didn't study the surname.
(In my defence, you can see how they do look almost identical in the register).

Thank you so much  :)

Added
I found a listing of mayors and echervins for Ciply.
It seems Armand Cornez was the mayor in 1753, and had been an echervin in the 1740s.
Gille Carlier was an echervin in 1713.

It's Gille Carlier I've come to a dead end with. (Sometimes in the Latin form Egidius)
He must have been born about 1675. Married 1700, and again in 1702 at Ciply.
It look as though he had a brother Antoine, married 1704 at Hyon. He is given as being from Ciply in the register. Godparents for their children swop about between the families.
I can't find their baptisms though.

Amand (neither Armand nor Arnaud) from the parish register.

A prénom I've never seen. But it fits the original posted ms better than Armand or Arnaud!

I fear your dead end really is dead. Before 16 March 1676 there's basically nothing left of the church register of Ciply. Only a handful of pages, all in bad shape, dating from 1608 to 1676. I highly doubt the full register from this period is hiding somewhere, waiting to see the light of day at some time in the future.
