Police photo

Hi all

I was trying to hunt down a photo which was placed in the hands of the inspectors office at Christchurch police in 1906.
I tired NZ Archives in CHCH with no luck.
Is there a way of tracking down this photo or is it lost to the past?
Listed in the Police Gazette Vol XXX1 issue 39. page 343.

My Great Grandfather George Lyall. 
 Would the photo been returned to the family?  He was never convicted as he died a few weeks into all this scandal

As far as I know the family did supply a photo
He skipped the country to Tasmania with a under age girl.
Caught on his return.
I phoned CHCH archives and they said they didn't hold the photo.
So would the police still have it or given back to the family? 
Certainly no one in my line have it.  We only have a photo when he was a child, love to of seen the grown man.
