John Marrison - Lost Marriages
« on: Wednesday 04 January 23 18:46 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to compile a family tree from brief notes handed down the generations.   John Marrison born c.1801, son of Richard Marrison and Elizabeth Hall who married in 1790 in Harworth, Notts.   I believe  later generations relocated to Sheffield.

John's notes say he married twice, first to Alice who died in 1854  and second to Mary who died in 1881, but with no surnames places or dates.

There is reference to a son, John, b.1839 from his first wife (Free BMD records a John Henry Marrison b.1839 in Sheffield,  mmn Adams).    Also a son, Charles Herbert Marrison b.1857 from his second wife (Free BMD records a Charles Herbert Marrison b. Sheffield, mmn Salmon)

To John's first wife is also Thomas b. 1828, Martha b. 1833 and Elizabeth b.1835.

I've can't find a marriage for Marrison/Adams or Marrison/Salmon and mention of Alice and Mary is suspect and perhaps incorrect.

Grateful for help in tracing the two lost marriages,

Alice is correct

1851 - Bawtry, Yorkshire

John Marrison    53 - b Haworth, Notts. Bricksetter
Alice Marrison    53 - b Tideswell, Derbyshire
Thomas Marrison    23 - b Bawtry
John Marrison    14 - b Bawtry
Ann E Fisher    3 - granddaughter
Arthur Kelsey    nephew, b Sheffield [Ancestry indexes age 42, but looks like 4]
Amelia Kelsey    11 - niece, b Sheffield [possibly age 1 yr?]

1841 - Bawtry

John Marrison    40
Alice Marrison    35
Thomas Marrison   13
Martha Marrison   8
Elizabeth Marrison   6
John Marrison     2

Alice buried Bawtry 23 Dec 1854

Given their ages, and a grandchild b 1848 I suspect there are further older children

Also a son, Charles Herbert Marrison b.1857 from his second wife (Free BMD records a Charles Herbert Marrison b. Sheffield, mmn Salmon)

Might this be Mary Marrison nee Salmon from 1861 census

William   Drabble   Head   1808   Pen knife cutler   Sheffield, Yorkshire
Mary   Drabble   Wife   1818    Eakring, Nottinghamshire
Mary Ann   Chadwick   Daughter-in-law   1840    Ecclesall, Yorkshire
Emily   Drabble 1845 Sheffield, Yorkshire
Wilfred   Drabble 1848

DRABBLE, EMILY       mmn SALMON
GRO Reference: 1845  S Quarter in SHEFFIELD  Volume 22  Page 617

DRABBLE, WILFRED   mmn SALMON
GRO Reference: 1847  S Quarter in SHEFFIELD  Volume 22  Page 587

added - Wilfred Drabble died age 4 buried 24 Aug 1851 St George Brook Hill Sheffield,
father William, abode Badger Lane

William Drabble age 33 widower Married  06 Mar 1842 Sheffield, Cathedral Church of St Peter & St Paul
Mary Chadwick age 24, widow father Wm Salmon, farmer

William Drabble age 44 Burial date 26 Mar 1854 Sheffield, St George, Brook Hill

So you could narrow down a possible marriage between John & Mary sometime between 1854 and birth of son 1857  :-\

edit to add
Perhaps they didn't marry
Possible baptism Mary Salmon 07 Dec 1817 Eakring Nottingham,
Father William Mother Ann, Denomination Anglican

Many thanks, everyone, for you very helpful replies.    Sadly there appears to be no conclusive record for John's two marriages but your findings offer both interesting leads and guarded assumptions.  I think the family tree will have to include a caveat.    Thanks again
