John King of Omagh.
« on: Friday 06 January 23 15:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
my G/G Grandfather John King was married in Glasgow in 1860 aged 20, on his marriage cert his father is listed as Felix King, labourer, his mother is listed as Anne King M.S. Mckay.
John applied for poor relief in 1879 giving his birthplace as Omagh Co Tyrone, but that's as much as i can find for his place of birth, i searched for his father on Griffiths, there are three Felix Kings listed but all three are in Cavan, one in Killishandra and two in Belturbert, there isn't a huge distance between Omagh and Belturbert as the crow flies, i'm just wondering if there's a link? or am i clutching at straws.

Do you have a copy of the marriage record?  FamilySearch indicates the marriage took place in 1857, not 1860 and that John was likely older than 20.  It may have said he was "of age" which means anything over 21.  Felix may have already been deceased by the time of the marriage -- not always noted as deceased on the marriage record.

This is a transcription from a family tree, they have not uploaded the cert so I can't vouch for the accuracy.

I know.  I looked.  It may be a church record. You'd have to look at the original microfilm.  I'd still get the civil record from ScotlandsPeople.

Thanks Eileen and Debra, i have a copy of the marriage cert from S.P., it states the marriage took place in 1857, at the bottom of the cert it states the marriage was registered in 1860,(why would it take so long to register?) it also states they were married in St Marys not St Mungos. it also gives Johns age as 20 not "of age".

I believe he may have lied about his age -- given the ages listed on the various census records.  This doesn't help you find Felix  but provides a more accurate year of birth.
