Lewis Llewellyn Sockett - Trefonen. Oswestry
« on: Friday 06 January 23 22:19 GMT (UK) »
Been trawling around looking at various records and found this probate record:

Sockett Lewis Llewellyn Maestop,Trefonen, Oswestry last seen alive 8 November 1982 dead body found 16 June 1983.
I believe he was born in 1892 thus making him about 91.
I can't find any other details , newspaper reports etc.
Not a direct ancestor and currently not in my tree but this has intrigued me.

I would be grateful if someone could find something.
Thanks

More likely to be the one born 1920 - see freebmd

The 1892 birth died 1958 & was just Lewis

Hi Carole,

You might be correct.
But the one born 1920 was Lewis Llewellyn William Sockett who was the son of a Lewis.
Wouldn't  the probate record have given his full name?

It isn't a probate record - it's administration so there was no will.

No death reg for him but he appears to have had quite a number of siblings

Married 1950 to Edna G Edmunds b 1921 - Married as Lewis L - not Lewis L W

Several trees on Ancestry have Lewis of 1892 and confirm his death in 1958. None seem to have his son of 1920, except for one which may have him as living and married. He appears twice on the 39 Register, the one with his family being crossed out.

He also appears on a 1941 directory at Waen Farm, Maesbury.

The person who married Lewis, married again in 1977, and may still be alive, although she appears on the 1939 Register, so it it probable he was alone when he died.

The probate record does mention a will.

Apologies - it does say "Administration with Will"  so it may be worth the £1.50 to download a copy.  Odd there is no death reg

Thank you all for your input.

i have spent hours searching through old newspapers hoping to find a report on his death but i can't find anything.
I know that family from the area moved to South Wales so that might give me a route to finding him.

Carole, I think you are right about downloading the will. It would be 30/- well spent.  :D :D

Hi Fisherman!! I am Llwwellyn's niece!:-) x there is a mix up - my grandadfather was Lewis Sockett who was born in 1892 and passed away before I was born in the 50's?   And he never resided at Maestop - grandad resided at Waen Farm, Maesbury.

Uncle Llewellyn  Lewis - I don't have all the information - but he had a boat, which he  called Maid Marian, after his sister - he sailed everywhere!! ...... what I understand he sailed out with a storm imient??...how true?? Don't know -.that is why he was last seen in November and found in June the next year!! Something happened to the boat and his details were found in a floating bag with contact details In. It was some time after he was found? And he is buried in a grave yard........I want to say Norway ?? But I may be very wrong?? X he has 2 daughters that I have never been In contact with  due to my age. Someone said - it was a huge family!! ....it was ...just one left!! Xx
