Vanhackovens & Poor School Records
« on: Monday 09 January 23 10:47 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I've had alot of help previously in breaking down a brick-wall to discover the Vanhackovens link to my family tree. But I have some questions pertaining to Poor School records.

I have 2 young boys a William (born approx 1844) and Thomas (born approx 1849) who were admitted to the Poor School in Central London in 1854 according to the London Poor Law School District Register 1852-1918 (Ancestry). The record shows a number of columns one is "To which Union Chargeable" which has "City" written against the 2 boys names and the other is "To which Parish Chargeable" which has what looks like St Michaels, Cornhill. As for name of parents, no names are given it just has "Father in the Workhouse". Their father is Thomas Vanhackovens

Would the Parish Chargeable be the Parish where the boys were baptised? I have not been able to find any baptism records and I don't know their mothers name. Would St Michaels have records that may not be on Ancestry or not yet digistised, maybe still in National Archives.

And any idea where I could find the name of the Workhouse where the father may be at this time.

Its also possible that their surname "Vanhackovens" is a very badly anglicised German or Dutch name

Thanks in advance for any help and advice!
Julie

I agree that the "To which Parish Chargeable" is St. Michael, Cornhill.

Ancestry holds the baptism records for this parish, which can be viewed here:
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/1558/images/31281_a102255-00006

But I imagine you have already looked through these?

A quick Google search brought this up:
https://aim25.com/cgi-bin/vcdf/detail?coll_id=15624&inst_id=118&nv1=search&nv2

so maybe it's the London Metropolitan Archives you should contact? It is possible that they have already digitised the surviving records, and uploaded them to Ancestry, but it never hurts to ask.

Oh wow thank you Queenie you have just helped break down another brick wall!

I couldn't find the Baptism records for the 2 boys, but I went through the St Michaels records page by page and lo and behold I found their father with the Christian names of Thomas Van-Hack and a surname of Ovens!

I've got alot more research to do!

Thanks again!

So glad you were able to break down a brick wall!  ;D

Just goes to show how important it is to find images of relevant parish registers; who would have thought that his name was actually Thomas Van-Hack Ovens?  :o
