British Army conscription abt. 1950
« on: Monday 09 January 23 17:12 GMT (UK) »
Is there anywhere I can read up on the process of conscription, please?

For instance, were all men conscripted to attend their local call-up centre and immediately allocated to a regiment, or was the allocation made only after basic training?

Also, I understand, of course, that the Army was able to transfer/second men from one regiment to another as they saw fit/the needs of any conflict dictated, but how likely is it that a man's request to transfer to a different regiment would be granted during his National Service, please?

I'm being told that a particular man was "conscripted into" Regiment A, but "requested to be transferred" to Regiment B "because his friends were there and he wanted to be with them", but without knowing more about the process I don't know whether this is just a family story or based on any sort of facts about the Army's systems at the time.

Thanks
STG
