Cary Fitzpaine Location
« on: Tuesday 10 January 23 12:11 GMT (UK) »
I found an 1871 census relating to my family. On FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5B2-6L1 : 25 June 2022)

Head of the family, Benjamin Edwards was born 1825 Cary Fitzpaine, Pembrokeshire
There is also a John Roach , Lodger and Colliery Labourer, born 1843 Cwmbrace, Pembrokeshire

I know Pembrokeshire but have no idea where Cary Fitzpaine is located. As for Cwmbrace, I am thinking it could be Camrose and wondering if Roach is Roch.

Any ideas for Cary Fitzpaine?

For Benjamin Edwards the image of the 1871 census just says Cary, no Fitzpaine.  The 1861 census says Carew.  I've had problems like this with placenames when Pembrokeshire people move west and enumerators provide imaginative spellings.  Again, from other census years it looks as though John Roach's surname was Roch, and Castlemartin his place of birth.  Best to check, though, I only had a quick look.

Thanks, I only use Family Search and cannot see the original. Carew makes sense.
Questioning Roach and Roch, there is a birth for each. From your further information it is Roch with mmn Richards. The baptism said Castlemartin. Richards certainly fits within my family.
