Marriage certificate 1883
« on: Thursday 12 January 23 21:25 GMT (UK) »
Hello.

Can anyone help me please.
I am confused.

I ordered a marriage certificate from the GRO in 2007. When it arrived it didn’t give me the woman’s fathers name or profession the space was blank.

Researching yesterday I came across the same marriage certificate on findmypast website and this marriage certificate gives me the fathers name and profession.

Also tells me that the grooms father was deceased.

Can anyone tell me why they would be different please?

Many thanks
Lisa

The one on FindMyPast, will be a parish record, I would think.
Do you have her in censuses?
Does the information fit?

As heywood has said, I suspect that the one you found on FindMyPast was the original parish register entry.  Every three months the minister had to forward a list of all the marriages which had taken place in the last quarter to the Registrar General.

The GRO certificate is a transcription of the record sent to the Registrar's Office which means that there are two opportunities for a mistranscription or omission of the details included.

I can’t seem to find her on the census’s before her marriage.

Trying to find the street in the census where she said she was living. But can’t find it.

Looks to me as if her father's name and profession has been written in a different hand (and pen).
Maybe added later?

If this is the person you are looking for then I think Minnie might have been illegitimate.

Birth

STROUD, MINNIE
Mother's maiden surname: PARKER
GRO Reference: 1864  M Quarter in HONITON  Volume 05B  Page 38

She might be the same person as Minnie PARKER who is with her grandparents Thomas and Maria in Exmouth in 1871.

Thomas and Maria had a daughter named Anna Maria in 1840 and she is with them aged 21 in 1861.

Anna Maria married in 1866 to John Francis BUTTLE and he is one of the marriage witnesses when Minnie married.  The other witness might be her half sister Bessie who was born in 1872.

You would need to get a few certs to prove this.

The second theory is that Anna Maria was her Aunt.

There is a baptism that I can only see a transcription for...

Minnie STROUD
Baptism Date:    12 Feb 1864
Baptism Place:    Sidmouth, Devon, England
Religion:    Anglican
Father:    James STROUD
Mother:    Mary Ann

Anna Maria did have a sister named Mary Ann but I cannot find the PARKER family in 1851 to see which children are still living.
