225 Bath Street Glasgow
« on: Friday 13 January 23 17:17 GMT (UK) »
My great aunt, Annie Bamlett married John Innes Gall in Kirkpatrick-Fleming in 1919.  She originated from Durham.  He was born in Arbroath, Scotland and at the time of their marriage he was an engineer at the HM Greta Ammunitions factory.  Soon after their marriage, they moved to live and work in Spain where John Innes Gall worked for the Rio Tinto Mining Company.

Annie returned to England, presumably for holidays and to see family on a number of occasions. On a couple of these trips in the 1930’s, she gives her address in the UK as 225 Bath Street, Glasgow. (Source:  Ancestry passenger lists)
As far as I know she had no family in Glasgow.  Does anyone know anything about this address in the 1930’s

Many thanks
Chris

In 1946, 225 Bath Street Glasgow is described in a classified ad in The Scotsman as "Marine Officers' Club".

And this from the Sunday Post in 1944, consistent with the same function.

There is a 1942 reference to the Marine Officers’ Club in Glasgow being recently opened, so maybe this is all irrelevant, although it may point to it being a boarding house or private hotel in the thirties.

Thank you so much for that. She didn't appear to travel during the war years but I will try and see if she gives this address on any other dates. I did wonder if it was connected to his work for the Rio Tinto company

In the 30's it was known as Roberts Commercial Hotel (from the 1933 Directory)

Thank you very much for that. I know she visited family in Durham as I have a picture of Annie with my mum, taken about 1938. She must have used Glasgow as a base.
I will try and find some more dates when she travelled.

As you thought, Alan.

The 1935 Valuation Rolls show it as a Boarding House, owner a Mr Robert McK Robertson.

Thank you so much everyone for the information. Annie must have based herself there during visits to the UK.
Thanks again
