James and Agnes Mair Bridgeton
« on: Friday 13 January 23 19:21 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to track down a birth certificate for James Mair. On his marriage certificate he states his parents were Adam Mair and Helen Kennedy, both dead at the time of his marriage in 1884. 1891 Census states that he was born in Glasgow. I cannot find a birth certificate for James with these parents. Thought maybe Adam and Helen adopted him ??? Any ideas anyone???

You don’t say when he was born, or how old he was on marriage.
Have you checked this birth?

That looks very possible Neale  ;)

I think this info likely connects to him:

UK, Royal Naval Reserve Service Records Index, 1860-1955
Name: James Mair
Birth Date: 1861
Birth Place: Glasgow
Date: 1888-1892
Service Number: 774 O

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8179856

If you register (you may have account already) it is free to download and view. This covers the period of the early 1890s. This James shows as born c. 1861 in Glasgow and a fireman/stoker. Parents James and Ellen on this document.

If he was illegimate, likely early details will be confusing.

Was there an occupation showing for Adam Mair, father to James on his marriage and death regs?

Added: I can see the original images of these certs on someone's family tree here www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/61940691/person/112125228368/facts ( a subs is needed to view). These give Adam's occupation as that of a joiner. This may not be correct though  :-\ Worth keeping an open mind on this.

Good Afternoon everyone, thanks for all your help so far.  Adam Mair's occupation was a weaver as far as I can make out, and James Mair was born in 1861, again as far as I can tell.  James Mair was a stoker on a steamship ???

The original certs for James (marriage and death) show Adam father as a joiner.

The details of the Adam I have seen in reference to the birth of a daughter Helen in 1857, showed that Adam as a weaver.

Clip from marriage cert below:

Thats the info I have too. I have a copy of Helen Kennedy Mair's birth certificate of 1857, but I cannot find James birth certificate. Thought I had as his name is James Millar Mair, and I found a birth certificate for this name but the parents are recorded as William Mair and Robina Millar from Camlachie.
