Looking at birth cert found by Neale1961 it may be correct. I wonder if you look at that and the cert for sister if they may be illegitimate. There is a Adam Mair who married Jean Tennant 1851 and listed as cotton weaver in 1861 census then in 1871 census is boiler maker forge and variations in 1881& 1891. Maybe Adam helped James become a joiner. There is also a will for Adam dated 8 May 1896(he died 22 April 1896) that may well be worth looking at. I'd say it is very likely that James is illegitimate.
