1939 Register Annotations
« on: Saturday 14 January 23 10:14 GMT (UK) »
Can someone please help with the annotations added to the left hand column mean please. I was looking at a great aunt in my tree, of whom I know very little, and on doing an Ancestry search came up with her in the register married to a music hall entertainer and living in London.
Her surname has been crossed out and her maiden name added with 9.4.45 (date) I C ANA M in the left column. I can only assume she left or lost her husband and reverted to her maiden name.

Thanks Carole. I now know that the "IC" means Identity Card. Now all I have to find is why something changed on the 9/4/45 by ANA M.

Slowly it comes. On the 9/4/1945 her Identity Card was changed in Lambeth because of "M" (marriage ?) from her married name to her maiden name. That is from Ethel Robbins to "Thiel".

I hope you don’t mind my saying but looking at a published tree, I think Ethel Robbins is being mistaken for an Ethel Shiel/Thiel.

There is a marriage 1915 for Thomas W Robbins and Ethel Dann, Camberwell.
1921 has this couple, I think, and she is born in Nottingham which fits with censuses for Ethel Dann.

There is a London Gazette notice dated 26 May 1942 in which Ethel Robbins, married woman of 117 Brixton Hill Court, Brixton, announces her intention to take the surname Thiel in lieu of her present surname of Robbins.

I think you're right Heywood. This started this morning while talking to a second cousin who mentioned a great aunt who couldn't hear or speak. While we talked I looked at my tree and the only possibility was Ethel May Thiel. I haven't really bothered with her. Searching on Ancestry I saw a tree by someone with a fairly strong DNA match to me showing she married and had a daughter (Eva May Shiel)  and a grand daughter (Cassandra Lynn Self) who is my strongest DNA match. I think I'll ignore this and start again having committed the cardinal sin of believing someone else's tree.
