1710s Local Farming Vocabulary
« on: Sunday 15 January 23 01:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am stuck on a few words from an Inventory of 1711 and think they may have a local connotation as I cannot find them in any reference work of archaic terminology from that era.  I would greatly appreciate any help.

The words are:
  • doshen, in reference to dishes and bowls found in the milk house
  • Meanor which was assessed with other livestock and valued at the same price as one swine
  • nogers valued with other farm instruments in the out parlour (which appears to be the barn)
  • Choany or Cheany potts valued with a looking glass in the chamber over the parlour.

I have also added snippets from the Inventory showing the last three words above.

Chamber Potts?
If you look at where the scribe has written the rooms in the dwelling at the start of each new room, he has written what must be "Chamber" several times - none of which have a "b" in them.
Searching on Google suggests this was an old variation of the "chamber".

Also searching for "Noger" suggests this was a term for an auger, or drill, sometimes used in Derbyshire mining.

A "doshen" is a wooden tub.
https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=r8kKAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA198&dq=Doshen&hl=en&sa=X&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=Doshen&f=false

"Meanor" is manure.

Hi, Goldie61

Thank you so much for your assistance with this.  It is greatly appreciated.  Neither of the resources you have used came up on my Google searches, and I went through all of the pages of results delivered.  What a shame.  Both of those resources have valuable information for work of this nature.  I've bookmarked them for future reference.  Thank you, again.

The Dialect Dictionary has nauger/nager/noger as an auger https://archive.org/details/englishdialectdi04wrig/page/232/mode/2up?view=theater

I think it's just sometimes the luck of draw on Google!
The two links I gave I have had for many years from when I was doing a lot of wills from Derbyshire/ Cheshire/Staffordshire.
You probably know this, but it's a good idea when looking for a specific thing or name on Google , to put it in inverted commas - eg "noger". Somehow Google then searches differently than just if it was within a general sentence.

Good luck!

Hi, JenB

Thank you for that link.  Another valuable resource that didn't come up on Google.  I have bookmarked that link, as well.  Thank you again for your time and assistance.  It is greatly appreciated.

Hi, Goldie61

Your experience has paid off in great dividends for my transliteration.  I'm new to this area of England doing most of my research in the south or the north, i.e. Scotland.

Yes, the quotation marks around VIP terms I use religiously.  I also use different extrapolations of my query, too, as I have found that sometimes Google doesn't understand what I'm asking it!

Many thanks again for your assistance.

I have bookmarked that link, as well.

Please note that the link I gave was from Volume IV of the Dialect Dictionary.

If you want to link to the entire work you need to go to https://www.rootschat.com/links/01q5n/ where you can see all six volumes. Then click on the one you need to open it.

Note, if you want to search within any of the volumes use the magnifying glass top left of the page of the volume you're using, not the white search panel top right.
