"No ceremony performed"
« on: Sunday 15 January 23 16:19 GMT (UK) »
A relative's burial was registered, St. Paul's Parish Church, Caton, Lancs., 11 Mar 1847, for Mary Ann Parkinson, age 22, with the notation "no ceremony performed".
Is there any significance to this notation?

Do you know her cause of death?  Did she take her own life?

No, I do not.  A genealogy friend suggested suicide, but would she have been buried in consecrated ground in that case?

Just checked the British Newspaper Archive, could see nothing there about her death.

I would be interested as why this was listed as such or was the decision made by the incumbent of the church or the family.

I am sure if it was suicide she would not have been buried in consecrated ground

I am sure a certificate might reveal  more

Just wondering whether the ceremony was performed elsewhere, BUT she was buried with family perhaps  :-\

Looking at the burial register - she was the only burial on that date - 11th March which was a Thursday.  There was one on the 10th & the next one wasn't until the 21st.

Possibility that either there was no "Incumbent" to carry out a service at the grave or if there was a charge - her family were not able to pay??

The incumbent was one Edward Thurtell, doing the regular ceremonies before and after her death, including John Parkinson, pretty sure he was her [paternal grandfather (I am related through her mother), only 4 months previously. The family was not destitute as far as I can see - family of stone masons, but possibly had fallen on hard times.

LM, may have to purchase a certificate!

Wondering if the incumbent was ill at the time of the burial, he just didn't do it, and the curate? buried her, without a full ceremony.

I am sure a curate can perform a burial,  please correct me if not,  but it does go back awhile,
