Elizabeth LUMSDEN died at Lossat on 21 Jun 1878. She was married to James LUMSDEN, baker, so he must still be alive at that date. Found her probate on Ancestry when looking for someone else.
Ancestry persists in using the term 'probate' in relation to people domiciled in Scotland. This is incorrect. There is no such process as 'probate' in Scots Law. The corresponding process here is Confirmation.

The place to go to is the Legal Records at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk where you can download a copy of the testament (will) for a small fee.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Did find a Lord Provost Passports listing on Ancestry for June 1858 in which a James LUMSDEN and Mrs LUMSDEN of Banffshire were going to France. Whether it is them or not, nothing clear.

In 1861 there's a James Lumsden, aged 56, married to Catherine Ferguson, 33, with daughter Catherine Ferguson Lumsden, born 19 March 1859, at Braco, parish of Grange, Banffshire who were married in Aberdeen on 20 January 1858. He farmed 270 acres and employed 6 men and 2 women. They could be the Mrs and Mrs Lumsden who got passports in 1858 - a belated honeymoon, perhaps?

I see that the banns of James Lumsden and Elizabeth Mackie were recorded in Banff on 15 November and Rothiemay on 3 December 1840. Have you viewed both original records on SP?

The marriage was announced in the Aberdeen Journal on 9 December 1840: Married, at Losset, parish of Rothiemay, on the 3d instant, by the Reverend Harry Leith, MR JAMES LUMSDEN, Baker, Banff, to ELIZABETH, second daughter of Alexander Mackie Esq, Losset.

Ian C

Hi Ian, my Ancestry membership has just ended but I did look for any emigration on family search without success.
